Good day all , the weekend is upon us .

The weather took a break and is shining bright out today . I took the morning to make a trip out to our property to check on my food plots . With all the storms we have had and rain , I wanted to see how the plots and the tree’s held out . My plots were damp , several areas had washed away down a hill side . I took several pounds of seed out to over seed and replenish the bad spots . I could start to see some fresh growth from the planting a couple weeks ago .

On the bright side , I did here a few turkeys in the woods as I walked the lane . On the bad side , I didn’t have any hunting gear with me . lol

That’s the way it goes sometimes .

I have family and friends in town for a family function this weekend . The weather is calling for rain possibly Saturday and for sure on Sunday . Our spring turkey season ends here in Missouri on May 8th . I am hoping to get into the woods a bit before it comes to an end .

Have a good weekend folks , enjoy it every way you can .

nationalguard

Good evening all , short note as the night rolls in . I thought some of you might appreciate the pic . My wife got it from a comrade in her unit . With all the weather we have had , she got a phone call today to be on stand-by for working the flood stricken areas here in Missouri . A small price the men and women in uniform pay for others …. to live in freedom .

God bless all men and women in uniform , be it in the National Guard or active duty , reserves alike , …. my hat is off to you .

As a disabled veteran , I honor you all and the sacrifices you make …

Good evening all ,

I hope all is well for everybody . Were still dealing with a lot of rain and storms here in the Ozarks . Flooding has begun around the region . The turkey hunting has been slim with the extreme weather . Hoping for a turn in the weather over the next week or so before the end of spring season .

‘Team’ Missouri Safari is looking into a possible alligator hunt this coming fall in Florida state . It would be a hunt to carry me back to my teenage stomping grounds . I always had a passion for the Green Swamp area .

Updates will be posted as available .

Make the best of the rest of your week folks , enjoy …

‘Congratulations’ to Brad Gutzman of Illinois . He was the lucky winner in a hunt auction package donated by Missouri Safari to a Ducks Unlimited chapter . Him and a friend will be joining Mike Strickland and myself on a fair chase hog hunt in the Oklahoma foothills later this year .

Happy Easter ...
I hope everybody is having a safe and enjoyable weekend .

Saturday, April 16, 2011

Good afternoon all , I hope you are enjoying your weekend so far .

We are starting to warm up from the chilly 38 degree start we had this morning . Slowly warming into the 50’s now . Wouldn’t be so bad if the winds would lay down a bit .

Took the family to Bass Pro here in Springfield , Missouri this morning . Let the kids get there picture takin with the Easter Bunny . I bought 3 more bags of BioLogic seed for my food plot areas . I plan on giving the plots a chance to start sprouting , then in a week or so before another rain , I will over seed everything .

Hoping for warmer weather tomorrow as we are heading to the Springfield Cardinals baseball game . Should be a good time with friends and family . As well as a nice experience for the kids .

Enjoy your weekend folks , make the best of it …

Friday, April 15, 2011

Yee Haw … we've made it to Friday . I hope everybody is doin ok .

If your looking for things to do this weekend or a chance to catch up with me …

Ill be stopping by Bass Pro in Springfield tomorrow to check out the Rock’n Rib’s event there , as well as pick up some spring hunting and camping supplies for the family .

Then on Sunday , you will be able to catch me in Springfield at the Cardinals baseball game with the family and some friends .

Good luck to those takin to the woods this weekend . Our regular season doesn’t open till Monday , cant wait .

Thankfully the storms passed through last night with no significant damage to report here . That doesn’t mean my food plot seed didn’t get washed away on the property , at least it will grow wherever it takes root .

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Good morning ,

I hope your week is progressing well and you are able to see the light at the end of the tunnel . Which reminds me , it was 1 year ago today my mother passed away suddenly . That is not an experience I wish on anybody . If you are fortunate to still have your parents with us , pick up the phone today and give them a call . Its never the wrong time to share your thoughts with a loved one , but it can wind up being to late .

RIP Helen Ernst 9/13/42 – 4/14/10

I have been busy working on sponsorship deals for ‘Team’ Missouri Safari . I had to prepare 2 contracts yesterday for the mail . Now I await there return with signatures . I am still working on a couple other deals that are in the works . When details are finalized I will post info .

I have started working with a separate seamstress to prepare shirts and hats for the ‘Team’ . The original outfit I was using has turned in to be a train wreck . Sample embroidery work is being worked on right now for my approval . Once I ok that and make final color choices , shirts / hats will be available .

Enjoy the rest of your week folks , and make the best of it .

Opening day of regular spring turkey season … Monday 4/18 …

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Good evening all ,

Had a nice day today working in the yard . Took my youngest daughter on a bicycle ride around the block for the first time , cant believe how fast they grow up . Get her a bike and training wheels and she’s gone … lol .

I do believe tomorrow I will be headin’ to the property . Need to start working on food plots and mineral sites before the rain returns later in the week . Also probably wouldn’t be a bad time to do some mushroom hunting .

I also have an appointment tomorrow with James River Valley Feed Company . You can see details on them and there partners at www.jrvwhitetails.com . We are working on a contract between myself and them for sponsorship of ‘Team’ Missouri Safari . I also have a few other details going on at this point with more info to come soon .

Be safe everyone , hope to see you in the woods soon ….

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Evening folks , just a short note . We didn’t do any hunting today as the winds were high and we had storms moving in .

As I write this , we have high winds , golf ball to baseball size hail , and wind gusts up to 68 mph . There are local power outages and reports of tree’s 8” in diameter being snapped off . I am at home with the family taking care of issues here on the home front .

I wish those heading out tomorrow the best , and those weathering the storm … hang tight . Be safe , be strong , we can conquer …

Saturday, April 9, 2011

Afternoon all , slow start to the youth season for my boy . We had a bad storm roll through this morning around 4am . When we got out to the property , the sky was cloudy and the winds were starting to pick up . I guess it was around 9 am when the sun started shining and the heat / humidity rose abruptly . I had all 3 of my children with me and they were ready to call it a day . I told my son that maybe tomorrow after church we will be able to get out again , just me and him . A lot depends on the weather as they are calling for strong storms again here during the day tomorrow .

He doesn’t appear to be upset by it all , He knows he has all season to hunt with me .

I was glad to find the blind still in tact and staked down when we arrived this morning . We had wind gusts upward of 50 mph this morning with the storm . Some people in the area seen hail as well .

For now we’ll call it a day , and look forward to our next venture into the woods .

Good luck all …

Friday, April 8, 2011

Good evening all , Had a pretty busy day today . The wife is at drill this weekend for the National Guard so I am at home with the kids . Nice to enjoy some time with them . I started the day by heading to the taxidermist with my turkey's and coyote . After working with the taxidermist and taking care of that , me and my youngest headed out to our property to set up the blind for my sons hunt tomorrow . I had a good area in mind where the birds seem to travel on a regular basis . We set the blind up and stored our stools and decoys for the night . Tomorrow we shall see how my judgement pays off . It will be my sons first time behind the gun during youth spring turkey season . If things go south tomorrow , at least he can hunt the regular season with me . We will also have an opportunity for 3 generations to be in the blind together this year for turkey season . My father will be here later in the month in his attempt to take a 'thunder chicken' . This will be my dad's first bird as well . An exciting season for me to be part of . Season has started across alot of the country and alot of friends have put birds down . Congratulations to those that have , and good luck to those that are still trying or haven't had a chance to partake yet . I wish you the best . Hunt hard , hunt safe , and hunt often ... I hope to see you in the woods ...

Thursday, April 7, 2011

Good evening fellow turkey hunters and friends alike , I made it home safe today from Oklahoma . The unpacking and repacking process has begun . As I unload my gear , I am sorting it and reloading for the youth season this weekend . My son and myself alike are very excited and getting anxious . He is especially excited knowing that I just put down two birds in Oklahoma . This will be his first year behind a gun for youth season . I am hoping for the best for him . In any case , I am sure we will have an enjoyable experience together and fond memories .

I wish you all the best in your ventures …

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Good evening folks , another quick post for the day . I put down my second and final bird in Oklahoma today on season opener . I was lucky to be sharing this hunting trip with two close friends , Mike Strickland and Les Powell . I took my second bird this evening along side Les for a double as he got his first bird of the season . Now its time to pack up and head home tomorrow , with a short stop at the taxidermist .

menlesdouble

Once home , it is time to get ready to hit the woods with my son for our youth season in Missouri this weekend . Im hoping he will be as successful as I have been so far . If not , the time spent together in the woods will be great .

Enjoy all , good luck …

Afternoon all , I hope you are enjoying it . I have been busy since day break chasing ‘Thunder Chickens’ in Oklahoma . We have seen a lot of birds all day long . We had to abandon our blinds this morning after the birds flew down . The wind has been strong here and we couldn’t here the birds , nor could they here us . They have stayed held up in the cover of the woods for the most part all day . I did make a bad shot right after day break on a good gobbler . I could here him in the woods rustling around as I approached . By the time I got on him again to finish him , I got beat by two coyotes . I took this one as the second ran off with the bird . My buddy Les took the second dog as he exited the woods . All we could find of the bird was feathers and scattered carcass parts . okcoyote

As the day continued we abandoned our bows and went to the scatter guns . We did a lot of runnin’ –n- gunnin’ trying to stay ahead of the birds for an ambush . Finally around lunch , our set up worked . I caught this tom as he crossed out of the woods and pitched down across a shallow ravine . He goes 8” on the beard with 1” spurs . firstokbird

Were takin a short break and heading back out this afternoon . The wind is predicted to lay down this evening . Hopefully I can get back in the blind and on my stick/string . It will also allow me to get some good video footage .

I wish all the best to everyone taking to the woods ….
